Am I the only one who understands what Arsene Wenger is trying to do? I hear of Arsenal fans crying out for Wenger to spend big money on 'quality players'. I read 'experts' and 'pundits' in the paper throwing around the idea that Arsenal 'must' buy a 'world class' finisher. Do they realise the financial implications behind their 'demands'? Quality players no longer cost £5M, they cost £15M+. Given that Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and almost everyone else has racked up huge debts by forking out sums of money for players not worth half of what they were bought for, it seems to me that Arsene Wenger is well aware of the 'bigger picture'. Arsenal might not been dominant, they might not win anything for years, but they are still up there and they are still able to compete despite spending a fraction of what others are in order to stay ahead of the game.

Winning has become everything in the modern game. Spend a fortune to make yourself competitive, spend more to get ahead of the competition, fail to win something and spend even more to try and get back on top. Fine if the financial input is greater than the outlay but in the current climate it certainly isn't.

People say that a football club can't just disappear because it has a big fan base or massive history. They said that about the Lehmann Brothers' Bank as well. I'm watching Portsmouth with interest as I believe the first club goes, it could be the start of something massive.

At least Mr Wenger, along with Mr Platini at UEFA are able to see the problems on the horizon. I just wish the millions of others who are so quick to criticise would open their eyes and see beyond the present.

You are not the only one Craig.

I listened to Graham Taylor on Radio 5 live saying today "everyone can see Arsenals problem, they need to buy a striker, Wenger is being stubborn, he needs to spend some money"

I said to Matthew a pretty similar thing.

Arsenal finish in the top 4 every season, they get to the semi Finals of the Champions League. That to me is great success, not failure. Only 1 team can win the league. what matters is that your club is well ran, financially healthy and the team is meeting reasonable expectations. Arsenal are doing that.

You just have to look at Liverpool to see what £20 million buys you, poor quality not up to the top of the Premier League in most cases.

Wenger is a quality manager and a very sensible one too.
