16th Feb - Stuart Attwell demoted, about two years too late
« on: February 16, 2012, 06:12:48 am »
Anyone watching Stuart Attwell can see he has no feel for managing a game of football or a clue how to handle players.

He is a blundering, fussy, overly officous pedant.

Yet he has spent four years on the Premier League select list after being the youngest referee to referee in the top flight at age 25 after being fast track promoted after just one year refereeing in the Football League.

Why was he fast tracked to the top when he has always been clearly useless.

His main claim to fame this season has been the sending off of Gary Cahill for Bolton against Tottenham after judging Cahill's foul on Scott Parker was denying a goal scoring opportunity even though the foul occurred on the half way line !!

You just couldn't make it up. Good riddance and don't rush back !!

Referee Stuart Attwell has been demoted from the select group of Premier League officials after a four-year spell dogged by controversy.
Attwell became the youngest referee to officiate in the top flight when, aged 25, he took charge of a match between Blackburn and Hull in 2008 after one season in the Football League.
However, a month later he awarded a 'ghost' goal in a Championship match between Watford and Reading.

Red alert: Attwell has been involved in a number of controversies
In 2010, he awarded Liverpool a controversial goal against Sunderland at Anfield when the away team believed the ball to be dead.
Most recently, he came under fire in December for sending off former Bolton defender Gary Cahill for denying Tottenham's Scott Parker a goalscoring opportunity, despite the offence taking place near the halfway line.
The red card was rescinded. Attwell, 29, will return to the national list to continue his development in the Football League.
Mike Riley, general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, said: 'This is not the end for Stuart. There are several match officials who have returned to the national list and benefited from it.'
