Thurs 4th April - Benfica 3 Newcastle 1
« on: April 04, 2013, 07:48:12 pm »
Team is out:

Krul; Simpson, Taylor, Yanga-Mbiwa, Santon; Perch, Cabaye (c); Marveaux, Sissoko, Gutierrez; Cisse

Should suite Pardew's general tactical sense perfectly i.e. sit back for 0-0 draw.

An away goal would be pretty useful though if we want to get to the semi finals.

Much depends on Cisse tonight.

The ban on football on our tv since the Wigan match does not apply to Newcastle's Europa league matches.

We are on holiday at the moment anyway in the Cotswolds, so it's now tuned in on ITV4 waiting for kick off.

But it is the first football I've watched since the Wigan match.

Half Time - 1-1

What would the half time talk be here ?

Both defences look suspect.

Keep possession and go for the second goal would be sensible.

Totally against Pardew's normal tactics, I'm expecting grimly hanging on to limit the damage.

Unlucky tonight, good performance but didn't get the breaks.

Two sloppy goals given away.

Hit the post twice.

Break through on goal from us incorrectly stopped and flagged off side.

Worst decision of the night being the Ameobi booking when he placed his hand on the Benfica players chest who then went down rolling around holding his face.

Ameobi booked for blatant play acting by the Benfica player.

If only the officials had tv replays to help them get decisions correct.

The turning point for me was Cisse's missed opportunity. One on one with the keeper, a well taken shot that came back off the post. If that goes in we win the tie in my opinion.
Santon was the victim to great game reading by the Benfica forward, although one thing I've been told a million times is if in doubt knock it out, better out of play than in out net and don't play it across the box. Its a mistake but he was unlucky it was pounced upon with such lethality.

Also did Taylor almost pull a fake injury to avoid a peno again. Looked like he started limping and holding his hammy as if to make an excuse.
