Always wondered how accurate those figures are John. Are these just salaries as the club is paying or do they account to general annual earnings? I see Fergie sitting at around £3M on there but surely he is raking in more than that if you consider that Audi are regularly handing him new motors etc. And that's just one of the major Man Utd sponsors...

Craig,
the salaries are made up of complex packages of bonuses, image rights, appearances, goals scored etc.

Think it's fair to say the salaries we have on the page are a general guide to their basic contracts.

When published we sense check them against any info we currently have.

The page is meant to be a general view of what people earn from the Premier League and does not intend to pretend to be exact earnings.

Maybe I should put a caveat on the page to avoid any misunderstandings.

Thanks for clarifying that John.

I've no idea how the media have any knowledge of what players are earning. It all seems to be a lot of guesswork that is then modified where and when necessary to emphasise a point in an upcoming transfer/contract story.

It's all going to come crashing down soon anyway. Teams are taking on board players at wages they just can't afford long term and at some point a bank is going to say no. It almost happened with Liverpool recently and is certainly an issue that won't go away. These sides without huge financial backers just can't keep spending the way they currently are. I imagine in five years time Liverpool will be down the league somewhere as they sell off players in order to claw back money to fight off debts owed to the banks.

I think it's because every company that has over a certain amount of money (not exactly sure on the amount) has to make publically available certain aspects of income and expenditure. This includes football clubs and so thye release it yearly (for the previous tax year) and then the clever people do the sums. To calculate what would of been for one season and what was the last. That would make known the total wage bill of the club.

However working out who each little bit gets too is a little harder I imagine. I mean the big moves are always announced as signing on a contract for like 2 million over 3 years, and I can work out that that is approximately 13k per week. whether that is including bonuses or not is another matter.

Take Ronaldo for example reports are claiming that he has signed: for 6 years for a total of around 65million (which is rediculous) and works out to be around 210k per week! Hoever what this doesn't tell us is if it includes the bonuses.

It could be that they have looked at how much he played and how often he scored for Man Utd over the 6 years he was there and so added on the bonuses he would of got for the same level of performance on to that. This way at least you aren't saying "He's on 100k a week" then end up shelling out for another 100k player, thinking you are within your wage budget, then come the end of the season find you are short of cash.
The bonuses I'd say it wouldn't include is any for a league/cup win,  as that would come straight out of the cash prize for winning.

Effectively there has to be a cost engineer (ie someone like myself) involved somewhere that is controlling the spending on wages. Someone has to be saying, we have this budget for the season, we have the following going out on players, stadium staff, matchday staff, training ground staff etc etc and we also have to have pots to pay bonuses etc for various things.

Personally the lack of a control figure behind the costing is why I think we are in such a mess. If Freddy had installed on in the first place he wouldn't have been spending such ridiculous amounts. I'm pretty sure the idea of cost control is a foreign concept at many football clubs.
