Time for a Geordie Captain

The time is right for the new era to be taken forward by a Geordie captain.

Well Steven Taylor was born in Greenwich, London but came to Tyneside within 3 weeks of his birth and has progressed through the Newcastle United Academy so that makes him a Geordie in our book.

Sam Allardyce has inherited a squad which has been bereft of leaders since Alan Shearer retired. Current contenders for the job are Shay Given, Michael Owen, Nicky Butt and Joey Barton though any possible new signing could be considered.

Allardyce has said that he will appoint a club captain for the start of the season once he has watched everyone in pre-season training and the friendlies.

Whilst Steven Taylor is only 21 he has everything else going for him. He has captained England at U16 and U17 level, he’s just been voted one of the best players of the tournament in the Euro U21 event, he plays in a good position for a captain and he loves to do it for the Toon Army.

So come on Sam, be adventurous and put a Geordie captain at the heart of the revolution, Steven Taylor could do for Newcastle what John Terry has done at Chelsea.
