Buying Newcastle United is his most high- profile venture to date. In 1982, at the age of 18, Ashley opened his first stores in London, called Sport and Ski. By 1990 he had three outlets, trading under the Sports Soccer name. Over the next decade, he opened about 100 more. But as a sole trader he was exempt from filing accounts at Companies House, and the true scale of the Sports Soccer business was hidden. In 1999 it became a limited company and Ashley went on to acquire Lillywhites, Dunlop Slazenger and Kangol, among other business interests. A series of secret meetings on Tyneside helped Mike Ashley achieve his Toon takeover dream. The sports mogul was little known on Tyneside until he formed St James Holding Limited with the sole purpose of buying Newcastle United. He then contacted Sir John Hall, who agreed to sell his family’s 41.6% stake to Mr Ashley for £55.3m. He immediately launched a £134.4m bid to buy the club. Mike Ashley was rumored to be a Tottenham fan before he bought Newcastle United.
